Summarizing the Blog Workshop

Introductions

The blog workshop started with lecturers’ introductions and also speech given by YB Lee Kim Shin and he touched about how the media has changed, etc etc etc And then, Sean Ang introduces political blogging.

According to the handout given by them

SEAN ANG, Program Manager for SEACEM and the Earth247.tv. In SEACEM, he develops ICT curriculum for activists in the South East Asia. Currently building a Global News Channel at Earth247.tv for community groups around the world. Previously, software engineer at MIMOS Berhad, HCI in Malaysia.

Sean is instrumental in developing ICT policty for 8th Malaysian Plan, Presently IT Advisor for Ministry of Housing & Local Government, Selangor State Government and Ministry of Science & Technology. Presented papers at International arenas.

And he talked about how to establish a succesful Political Blog and about how kiasu Malaysian is when they want to voice out their opinions on the internet due to the fact that they are afraid of people might stalk them! (Maybe I added that part but afraid of Government tracking them down is correct) and most of the people like atleast 90% of the people use pseudonym when they are blogging or commenting or relevant blog but in the actual reality, you need to use your real name, baru ada umphh (Got Power).

Then, he mentioned about Behind the Scene of a succesful blog. What do you need to be like Jeff Ooi? Patience and Tolerance when it comes to collecting your information and no misleading informations. Of course you need to contact people to get the “inner informations”. If you don’t have much contacts in the politic world, you can try contacting him (I’m not sure how to though) and he might be able to give you some contents for your blog post.

Blogs as he mentioned are “free speech” place to voice out your opinions but how are your blogs are actually rated? by your parents? sister? dog? cat or your neighbour? well, it is rated by your readers.  According to Sean, he is now establishing a system similar to digg (Just like Youtube video comments where spams will be closed) blogs worth the read will go on top while spam will go below and these “ratings” will be given by the members of the community of the system. So when the community is launched, you can submit your political blog to it >.>

Wordpress?

After a few talk here and there, they finally got into the “technical system” of blogging. The trainer for this part of the workshop is Rachel Chan.

RACHEL CHAN, Program Administrator and Web Editor for SEACEM. Manages the SEACEM newsletter. Contributes for various online portals. Rachel’s academic background is in Sociology and has written on Virtual Ethnography.

She started off with basic wordpress account (How to register, choosing templates, blogging, comment, editting, managing link and all the informations you need to know when you are starting your blog as a newbie) and then introductions to other things. For instance, twitter (follow elezend if you want to follow me on twitter ^^), mobile blogging and flickr (But the address was banned so we couldn’t access it…).

And then she compared between account hosted on WordPress and also self-hosted (As in buying your own domain or hosting package) and of course self-hosted is much better (At the very least, you get more templates, can choose thousands of plugins which only like less than 10% will be actually used and not much restrictions)

Twitter

A Web site and service that lets users send short text messages from their cellphones to a group of friends. Launched in 2006, Twitter was designed for people to broadcast their current activities and thoughts. Twitter expanded “mobile blogging” (updating a blog from a cellphone) into “microblogging,” the updating of an activities blog (microblog) that distributes the text to a list of names. Messages can also be sent and received via instant messaging, the Twitter Web site or a third-party Twitter application. A MySpace account can also be updated.

Why choose flickr?

I know many of us have other photosharing website accounts (In example, photobucket) so why can’t we use it? It is because

  • You can send mms through your mobile phone straight to your flickr account
  • Integration between wordpress and flickr thus you have the flickr plugin to show pictures straight from your flickr account beside your blog (OOooo handy)
  • Plus, you can upload pictures straight using a software (I’m using uploadr XD!)

So far, we aren’t done with the workshop yet ._.
