Oricon: Most Moving Manga
Another poll result (I know this is what you post when you’re lazy). This is a result collected by Oricon from both women and men age ranged from 10~40. (Thanks to Google Alert and also Anime Nation) I am crediting wikipedia for all the synopsis
The top five combined results were:
01. One Piece
One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda with an anime adaptation. It focuses on a ragtag crew of heroic pirates called the Straw Hats, formed and led by Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy’s greatest ambition is to obtain the world’s ultimate treasure, One Piece, and become Pirate King.
I can’t give the details as the early chapters I read are not very touchy.
02. Slam Dunk
The main character of this manga is Hanamichi Sakuragi, who started out as an outcast who fights as a method to gain power and publicity, becoming the leader of a gang. Hanamichi, being very unpopular with girls, has been rejected by them fifty times. Yet, he finds out that Haruko Akagi is the girl of his dreams, and is happy when she’s not scared of him like all the other girls he has asked out.
Haruko, who recognizes Hanamichi’s athleticism, introduces him to the Shohoku basketball team. Hanamichi was reluctant to join the team at first because he had no previous background in any sports and thought that basketball was a game for losers (also because the fiftieth girl rejected him for a basketball player). Sakuragi, despite his immaturity and hot temper, proves to be a natural athlete with potential and joins the team in order to impress Haruko and prove that he is worthy of her. Kaede Rukawa - Sakuragi’s bitter rival (both on the basketball court and love, even when Rukawa doesn’t acknowledge Haruko’s crush on him), the star rookie and a “girl magnet” - joins the team at the same time. Hisashi Mitsui, an ex-junior high school MVP, and Ryota Miyagi , a short but fast player, both also rejoin the team and together these four struggle to complete team captain Takenori Akagi’s dream of making Shohoku the national champion. Together, these misfits gain publicity and the once little known Shohoku basketball team becomes an all-star contender in Japan.
Never read but my friend is a fan of it (She enjoys Dear Boys as well).
03. Honey & Clover
You can read the story here. I did not copy and paste because it has a long description.
I admit I am not a huge fan of Honey and Clover and barely watched it except for a couple of episodes which I accidentally stumbled on when I was switching between channels on my TV. However, I understand that Honey and Clover is about things in life.
04. Fruits Basket
Tohru lives with a bunch of good-looking guy and they have some problems as they will turn into animals when they are touched by the opposite gender. Then, Tohru sets a goal which is to help them solve this problem. Is the description short enough?
I’ve read some of the front chapters and the story involves quite a lot of characters and sometimes I find myself lost if I didn’t pay much attention which I read this (I skim through most of the mangas I read).
05. Baby & Me / Sunadokei / Touch (three-way tie)
Baby and Me
Takuya Enoki loses his mother, Yukako when she dies in a car accident. Takuya now lives with his father, Harumi, and his baby brother, Minoru. Takuya’s baby brother is only two years old and requires much care. Although Takuya is only a fifth grader, he cooks, cleans, sews, scolds, and does everything that is normally a mother’s job. Between his housework and looking after his baby brother, Takuya begins to feel a helpless gap between his friends who have fun everyday after school. Neighbors blame him for Minoru’s constant crying. His stress gradually builds up and bursts at a point. Because of a mistake Minoru made, Takuya reacts violently. He cannot help feeling upset over Minoru, who is stressing him and taking up all his time.
One day, when Takuya picks Minoru up from preschool, he starts to walk faster imagining what it would be like to leave his little brother behind him. But soon, Takuya realizes what he has done and runs back. He finds Minoru with his eyes full of tears and a brutal dog is blocking Minoru’s way. Takuya dashes in full speed and saves his little brother. After coming home and seeing Minoru sobbing, Takuya realizes that Minoru cries because he is just lonely and becomes ashamed of himself. From then on, Takuya learns to love his little brother as family and his long life story of being a mother and a brother at once begins.
As time pass by, Takuya Enoki gradually adapts to his role in the family. Some of his friends in school like Akihiro Fujii and Tadashi Gotoh, have little brothers and sisters that go to Minoru’s preschool, and are Minoru’s friends. At the end of the series, while trying to find Takuya, Minoru is hit by a car, and undergoes major surgery to keep alive. Luckily, he just barely survives.
Sounds like a good story for me to read.
Sunadokei
I am unsure about this manga because the wikipedia entry shows Natsuiro no Sunadokei.
Touch
You can read the story here.
You see, I have actually seen this manga a couple of times on OneManga but never intended to read it because I have some sort of discrimination against non-fantasy and too realistic mangas especially older series (I don’t like the art).
The top five choices from women were:
01. One Piece
02. Slam Dunk
03. Fruits Basket / Honey & Clover (tie)
05. Sunadokei
The top five choices from men were:
01. Slam Dunk
02. One Piece
03. Touch
04. Maison Ikkoku
When the previous landlord decides to retire, he sends Kyoko to be the new landlord. Yusaku almost immediately falls in love with her, but due to the meddling of the other boarders in the building, he has trouble expressing this to her. He tries several times, but is almost always interrupted. When Kyoko joins a women’s tennis team, Yusaku then has to compete with her handsome coach.
This reminds me of Honey & Clover’s story and it is also drawn by Rumiko Takahashi (The one who created Inuyasha)
05. Doraemon
A robot cat from the future that has a pouch that every single person of earth wants because it has many magical items (Which includes place-travel door, helicopter headband and much much more).
If you do not know what is Doraemon, you fail as an Anime fan! it is one of the best mangas that I’ve ever read about and I grew up with it. I am guessing the reason why it is listed as one of the most moving manga is because of the ending although there are a few endings (Which can be found on the internet).
*Sings with GamicPress* an an an…. totemo daisuki~ Do-a-eh-a-mon
If I were to include one anime that made me cry like a baby, I will definitely include Grave of the Fireflies by Hayao Miyazaki (The whole movie is sad… very sad) and also Scrapped Princess (The last few episodes) but this is about manga, right?

Mine? O.o my manga ? XD~ or my poll >.>
Ooh, moving animes, yeah Grave of the Fireflies. There is one other I’ve seen that always manage to get the entire room bawling; “Dog of Flanders” based on the british novel with the same name. Pure distilled gutwrench.
I’ve seen the advertisements of that anime from the tapes my parents used to rent for us to watch.
Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flanders_no_Inu
I will try checking on it ^^
Ah yes, that one is the series, the one I’ve seen is the movie remake from 1997:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0304072/
To quote a reviewer:
“Be warned though– the US DVD version which floats around is heavily edited and only features an English vocal track, so you might want to try and get hold of an Asian import, which isn’t that hard to come by these days,”
Wow, Doraemon is an anime??? I got like 10 books about it and never knew!
Thanks for the warning Cl ^^
Doraemon is an anime.. lol.. I probably got like 40 volumes or so but I lost it
I think Tv2 or Tv3 used to broadcast the show
