Repost: The art of teaching your daughter

Re-post means I’m too lazy to think of new stuff

This is based on my dad’s way of teaching his daughters aka Naki(me!) & Niki

1. Learn from your experience, revise on your daughters.

My dad used to study in Chinese school (Schools that makes Chinese a compulsory subject) and because of that, he realized that his English & Malay are weak thus this is the reason why he sent me and my sister to English school (Schools that make Chinese an option) despite my uncle told him, “A Chinese should learn how to write, speak and read Chinese”. Well, I do know how to speak, read some and write some though…

2. Let your daughters be the judge.

Tuition classes? Just because everyone been sending your kids to tuition classes does not mean you should too; send your daughters to those classes. It might be useless if your daughters were forced to go to classes after school hours that she hates. Moreover, during her “break time” when she is supposed to be relaxing by watching television or go online.

My dad never forced us to go to those classes until we told him we want tuition on certain subjects and he will ask us to find classes by our own and the only thing he will do is providing us transportation and also tuition fee. It will make you realize that things that you’ve decided upon, you should take responsibilities on it thus you will be more focused during the tuition classes.

3. Look at the brighter side of your daughter’s interests.

“No, you should stop reading comics cause it will cause brain damage”

-Words that my dad had never said to us before.

Instead, he encouraged us to read… comic books by giving us pocket money just for those books! Why? because he knows he is not-a-teaching-material when it comes to English or Malay language because of the #1 reason. When we were exposed to comic books at a younger age (Around 7 years old in my case), We will first be attached to the pictures. Slowly, we read and understand by referring to the pictures below the dialogue box.

This is like the work of a picture dictionary but then in a fun and better learning way although it might not come cheap (My dad probably spent more than RM1000 on comic books). Therefore, I must admit my Malay language is not too bad compared to other people and all thanks to Doraemon and also my dad (Of course!).

4. Your study does not affect me

Of course, from small, you’ve heard your mom or dad been telling you, “STUDY! it’s for your own future!” and you being the rebellious one would just ignore it and continue watching your Dragonball (Was it only me who watched it!?). My dad too been telling me the same thing but in other words.

“I don’t care whether you study or not since it’s your own future,”

Like the reason #2, even study was based on ourselves. We study if we like it. If we don’t, we will just watch television. After a certain period, you will feel guilty for not studying and study some (Better than nothing) without being forced by anyone. This method proved to be useful on us because both me and my sister managed to get into science classes without dad nagging beside our ears.

I hope you can learn some methods from my dad. And these methods are yet to be tested on sons because my dad has only 2 daughters!

I agree, it’s important for kids to have enough freedom to figure out what they like and don’t like to do, and not do things just because their parents want them to…so many people are unhappy because their parents insisted they become doctors etc…

But in the end they still follow their parents advices and ended up with a good job =P well, that’s special case.

My parents are fine with whatever job I can get because they know I am lazy, lol.
